Stone & Chalk is the largest fintech hub in Asia and is already the “centre of gravity” for fintech in Australia, after just 18 months of operation. Stone & Chalk is a collaborative effort between fintech entrepreneurs, VC firms, companies, academia and government, to incubate and nurture financial services-focused tech start-ups in ways not seen in Australia before.

Community engagement is central to the mission of Stone & Chalk, and the Head of Community leads the creation of Stone & Chalk’s Community Strategy; shaping the heart and soul of Stone & Chalk’s work, supporting start-ups and other community members accelerate their growth and success, through mutual support, access to expertise and the power of the collective.
This role takes a user-centered design approach, to develop and implement community programs, and as the key business decision maker for all start-up programs; provides leadership and roadmap definition for start-ups as they join the community and scale and commercialize.
Closely connected to the start-ups residing at Stone & Chalk as well as those within the extended community, the Head of Community actively seeks to understand both start-up members’ needs and development gaps to design and lead a series of initiatives that support growth & development. These programs and activities focus on helping start-ups to plug their four primary needs: access to customers, capital, talent and expertise. As a futurist, you provide analysis, research and external connections to peers and thought leaders.
As a connector of dots and broker of meetings, connections, and relationships, you seek out advocates and peer support for your community members to enhance their experience and accelerate their growth.
This role combines community building, communications, user-experience, project management, planning and strategizing – all infused with deep start-up empathy…. yet able to set clear boundaries and commercialize at a program level to meet clear community goals.
We are looking for someone with demonstrated experience in building communities, creating programs, and managing resources to empower and enable community members to scale and grow.
You will have a natural ability to clearly articulate and represent the purpose of the organisation, whilst using your advocacy skills to rally support for your initiatives, both with internal and external stakeholders.
You possess commercial acumen, and are able to build compelling business cases that get buy in from the wider Fintech community and corporate partners. Using research and analysis skills, you keep up to date on industry and market trends, best practice and resources and have the smarts to utilise the right mix of these elements at each stage of the start-up journey to support our residents’ success.
You understand the power of governance, structure and project management to enable collaboration and innovation. You have a strong network to lean on that can provide high levels of expertise, personal mentorship as well as valuable relationships for the community you curate and guide.
You have strong project and team management experience, are a supportive leader a clear communicator, and possess an ability to think strategically and commercially as you mentor/coach your team to develop these skills alongside you.
Ideally you already understand and have experience of the Financial sector and more specifically, Fintech.
Objectives & Key Results for the Role
1. Community Engagement Program
Communicate and lead the implementation of the Community Engagement Program (aka Start-up Resident Journey) inclusive of marketing and communications relating to the program. Project manage and coach relevant team members to ensure the Program is being successfully delivered and communicated, according to agreed timelines. Ensure buy-in from start-up residents through the development & implementation of a multi channel communications plan and powerful feedback loop. Ensure a minimum viable audience is achieved for each initiative through great F2F communications and targeted outreach (with assistance from your direct report, the Community Coordinator).
Design and oversee the implementation of all start-up member activities (e.g. expert talks, pitch practice sessions, resident skills-share, monthly resident assemblies, members’ social events & lunches, mentor and investor program and all start-up engagements with Corporate Partners such as Executive Education Sessions, Office Hours, Lunch & Learns, etc.) whilst delivering to budget and achieving financial targets for sponsored and other events.
2. Development of Community Culture
Continue the development of the Stone & Chalk culture, ensuring it is integrated into all program activities and initiatives and therefore reinforced in daily and weekly practices. Facilitate a collegial S&C team that will act as guardians and advocates of the Stone & Chalk culture, each playing a role in fostering and encouraging resident engagement in the community.
3. Continuous improvement of Community Engagement
Improve the feedback mechanism for start-ups and partners to give constant input and feedback on S&C performance, and utilise this feedback to improve community programs and initiatives.
4. Community Database Development
Manage the start-up member database, which captures information and metrics for each start-up company. The database will be dynamic and constantly updated to provided accurate and actionable insights and will identify the needs and interests of each resident as they progress through the start-up journey and stages.
5. Board Reporting & Feedback
Regular reporting to board, stakeholders, and wider community Proactively prepare monthly board activity reports, Quarterly & Annual Reports, and biannual Pitch Books.
This is a senior role reporting directly to the CEO, and leading a team of direct reports as below: (i). Community Co-ordinator: early career support role working alongside this role and focused on strengthening the community via the events, activities and programs run to benefit and accelerate their growth. You will be a key mentor and guide for their development.
(ii). (F)Interns from time to time we offer 3month Internship to students seeking out work experience and learning within the Fintech start-up sector.
