Palace of Fine ArtsOur Day 2 venue is the sprawling and gorgeous Innovation Hangar at the spectacular Palace of Fine Arts. The Palace was built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition and then rebuilt in 1955 and feels a bit like something from ancient Greece.

Innovation HangarThe Innovation Hangar used to house the Exploratorium prior to their move in 2013. It’s a fun, unique space with lots of round edges, comfy nooks, and massive skylights that pour natural light in.

  • Alexis Ohanian

    Session: Keynotes
    Alexis Ohanian is the cofounder of Reddit, tech investor, and author of the national bestseller Without Their Permission.

    Born in Brooklyn, Alexis grew up in the suburbs of Baltimore, MD where he slowly realized his desire to play professional football would potentially not pan out. So, after graduating from UVA, he turned his efforts towards making the internet a better place. While he is still patiently awaiting the news of his starting position in the NFL, he currently spends his free time investing in startups, passionately cheering on the Washington Redskins, and facetiming his cat, Karma. His mother always told him he was special.

    Alexis was the top-rated speaker at CMX Summit East this year, and he had such a great time that he’s coming back! He’ll share insights from building one of the biggest collections of communities in the world.

  • Emiliana Simon-Thomas

    Session: Keynotes
    Emiliana is a leading expert on the neuroscience and psychology of compassion, kindness, gratitude, and other pro-social skills. Her work spotlights the science that connects health and happiness to social affiliation, caregiving, and collaborative relationships, as she continues to examine the potential for – as well as the benefits of – living a more meaningful life.

    She’ll speak about her work with companies, like Facebook’s Protect and Care team, which aims to foster authentic, benevolent communication – particularly in the face of conflict – and support people through life’s difficult moments. Ultimately, her work aims to bolster social connection, kindness and community and, in turn, benefit your business and bottom line.

  • Jono Bacon

    Session: Developer Communities
    Jono Bacon is a leading community manager, speaker, author, and podcaster. He is the founder of Jono Bacon Consulting which provides community strategy/execution, developer workflow, and other services. He also previously served as director of community at GitHub, Canonical, XPRIZE, OpenAdvantage, and consulted and advised a range of organizations. He is the author of the critically-acclaimed The Art of Community, is a columnist for Forbes and opensource.com, founder of the Community Leadership Summit, and co-founder of the Bad Voltage and LugRadio podcasts.

    Jono will be bringing his immense open source experience to bear as he explains how to build a truly lasting and effective developer community.

  • Scott Shigeoka

    Session: Keynotes
    Scott grew up in Hawaii, and his first “job” was picking mangoes in his backyard. He has organized music festivals, artist residencies and leadership retreats around the world. He is exploring different ways to bring diverse groups of people together to build deep connections and mobilize toward collective social change.

    In 2014, Scott moved to Iceland to research how music has supported the growth of social movements in the country through a fellowship with MTV Networks and Fulbright. He is now a community designer for OpenIDEO, which has convened more than 100,000 people to collaboratively address our world’s toughest social and environmental challenges.

  • Jake McKee

    Sessions: Keynote & Support Communities
    Jake has been building and running online communities for some of the world’s biggest brands for years. His work has landed on the cover of Wired magazine, and has helped shape the direction of company/customer interaction.

    He started his career working to build the emerging commercial web, ran online/offline community efforts for LEGO, built a boutique social media consultancy (ultimately selling to PwC), and ran the global support community for Apple.

    If it has to do with online community, super users, or the business value of online community efforts, he can talk your ear off about how to do it successfully.

  • Gina Bianchini

    Session: Keynote
    Gina Bianchini is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mightybell. Mightybell continues a tradition of online communities that bring together people who share a common identity, interest, passion or goal. Today, Mightybell is home to 20,000 active “identity” networks created on the platform, and growing rapidly.

    Before Mightybell, Gina and Marc Andreessen co-founded Ning, a pioneering social platform for niche networks online. Under her leadership, Ning grew to 90 million people across 300,000 active communities in entertainment, politics, education and every bizarre subculture you can imagine (and some you probably don’t).

    In addition to Mightybell, Gina serves on the board of directors of Scripps Networks, which owns HGTV, The Food Network and The Travel Channel, and also co-founded LeanIn.Org, the online community organization dedicated to supporting women leaning into their ambitions.

    Gina and Mightybell have been featured in Wired, Fortune, Fast Company, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. She has also appeared on Charlie Rose, CNBC, and CNN. She grew up in Cupertino, California, graduated with honors from Stanford University and received her M.B.A from Stanford Business School.

  • Derek Andersen

    Session: Keynote
    Derek Andersen is the founder and CEO of Startup Grind, a community of over 200 Chapters in 80 countries designed to educate, inspire, and connect entrepreneurs. Startup Grind’s values of giving, helping others, and making friends have spread across the world. Since 2012 Startup Grind has hosted 3,000 events for more than 150,000 entrepreneurs. In 2009 Derek founded Vaporware Labs, incubating many products including Startup Grind and professional social network Commonred, which was acquired by Income.com in 2012. His entrepreneurial career consists of mostly spectacular failures with occasional successes. Previously, he worked at Electronic Arts on games like Burnout Paradise, Mirror’s Edge, Sims 3, and The Godfather. He lives in Palo Alto with his wife and three children.

  • Adriana Cerundolo

    Session: Developer Communities
    Adriana Cerundolo is the Program Manager for Google Developer Groups, a global community of 600+ in-person developer meetups focused on Google tech. She’s been supporting communities professionally for 6 years, but her community work started in university where she was a transfer student counselor and event organizer. Adriana graduated from Brown University with B.A. in Economics, and finds economics to be the most interesting of all social systems.

    When not supporting developers, Adriana is building community around consciousness. She started the Mystic Googlers group for employees interested in alternative healing and spiritual practices, and leads sound healing circles around the Bay.

    Adriana will be sharing the structure and best practices of Google Developer Groups.

  • Amir Shevat

    Session: Developer Communities
    Amir Shevat is the Head of Developer Relations at Slack. Previously Amir was the global Startup Outreach lead in Google Play. Amir led scalable programs in Developer Relations and Google Campus Tel Aviv. Amir has also founded and sold several startups. He is a developer at heart with a passion for B2C and mobile.

  • Holly Goldin Firestone

    Session: Day 1 Workshops
    Holly is the Manager of Community Programs at Salesforce. Holly has proven an unstoppable force in the community profession, starting her career as a Community Manager for Birthright NEXT, followed by building Atlassian’s large user group community, then ascending to Salesforce to run the Salesforce MVP program and massive User Group program. In the year and a half Holly has been at Salesforce, these community programs have experienced enormous growth. The Salesforce User Group program has grown over 50% and the Salesforce MVP Program has grown by 30% requiring creative tactics to manage these growing programs. Holly loves cheese, puns, cheesy puns, dogs, and the great state of Texas. Queso is everything.

    Holly will be teaching a workshop on how to scale your community beyond what you can personally manage.

  • Jennifer Sable Lopez

    Session: Day 1 Workshops
    Jennifer Sable Lopez is a leader in the community and digital marketing space who built the Moz community team and strategy from the ground up. Jen is a frequent speaker at marketing and community conferences such as CMX Summit, FeverBee Sprint, New Media Expo, Seattle Interactive, MozCon, SearchLove and Search Marketing Expo.

    Jen and her husband (an amazing photographer), Rudy, live in Seattle with their daughter Eva. Jen is a self-proclaimed geek and faux vegetarian, and she prides herself in having kicked Colon Cancer’s butt at the young age of 37.

  • Caty Kobe

    Session: Engagement Lightning Talks
    Caty is on a mission to help Square‘s Sellers get back to work, faster. In her role as Scalable Support Lead, she empowers the Community, Social Support, and Support Content teams to develop scalable, yet engaging solutions to bring Sellers together around common topics of interest and expertise. She’s worked at companies ranging from Get Satisfaction to OpenTable to FeverBee on a wide range of community and customer education-focused initiatives, and has been fortunate to speak to community-related topics on 3 continents. Caty says to give her a high five at CMX Summit if you made it this far into her bio.

    Caty will be sharing community engagement tips as well as the overarching strategy she brings to engagement.

  • Shira Levine

    Session: Day 1 Workshops
    Shira Levine is a pioneer and innovator in the online community marketing field, having held leadership positions at eBay and Zynga. She is a tireless evangelist for how a companies can partner with their online communities to drive ROI, lock in retention, and reduce overall costs. She specializes in broad customer and enterprise engagement best practices and supply-side marketplace community strategy. She now runs her own community consulting practice, Fanchismo.

    Shira will be teaching a workshop on how to build on your existing successes, nail internal diplomacy, and get organizational support for your community efforts.

  • Scott Moore

    Session: Day 1 Workshops
    Scott has over 20 years of experience initiating and maintaining communities through a variety of online media. He has overseen the production of content and communications, written and visual; trained, supervised and mentored groups of volunteers to perform vital tasks; managed teams responsible for supporting and fostering large online communities; and designed and overseen the development of social interaction technologies.

    Scott will be teaching a workshop on how to plan for community success in the areas of platform, moderation, and engagement.

  • Maia Josebachvili

    Session: Employee Engagement
    Maia Josebachvili is the VP of Strategy & People at Greenhouse, where she’s part of the executive team that’s led the company through 8x growth in just two years. Previously Maia has been a Founder & CEO, a derivatives trader on Wall Street, an engineer, and a pro-skydiver.

    Maia has received numerous awards, most notably being named Inc. Magazine’s 30 Under 30 and Workforce Magazine’s Game Changer of 2016. She’s a regular speaker at conferences and her ideas have been featured in Business Insider, CEO World, and Fast Company.

  • Sarah Schaaf

    Session: Engagement Lightning Talks
    Sarah is Director of Community at Imgur, where she focuses on lifting the world’s spirits through the power of online community. Sarah is on the front lines of Imgur community trends, where she works to foster authentic self-expression and amplify positivity at scale. Serving as the voice and champion of Imgur’s community, she oversees all user communications, ensuring that community feedback is represented in the product and brand. Sarah is a frequent speaker on internet communities and has been quoted in TechCrunch, Forbes, Fast Company, Mic and honored as one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in 2016.

    When not immersing herself in dank memes, Sarah enjoys a life as a burrito connoisseur and Netflix marathon enthusiast.

    Sarah will be sharing the source of her engagement programs inspiration.

  • Alicia Taggio

    With extensive experience in the content and social media space, Alicia helps both B2B and B2C brands connect with the right people to help tell their story, and harness leads and sales in the process. She’s spent the past 5 years running the social and content strategy at Flight Centre, launching employee advocacy programs and influencer outreach initiatives. She now leads the Global Advocacy team at Hootsuite, where she is responsible for all internal and external advocate programs including the Ambassador program, influencer outreach, community events and employee advocacy.

    Alicia will discuss how advocates can help to move your business forward by building credibility through third-party validation and amplifying your reach.

  • Paul Wilcox

    Session: Support Communities
    Paul’s been a Googler for 12 years where he’s worked in customer support for many products including Google Search, iGoogle, Google+, and Nexus. The focus of his career has been translating technical concepts into user-friendly communications. As a Community Manager, he’s helped lead the company’s social support operations including building communication playbooks, defining the tone and scope of support, and integrating workflows with other support channels. He’ll be sharing insights from his work building this support channel for Google.

  • Julianne Niemaszyk

    Session: Support Communities
    Julianne has led community for Google Docs for the past 3 years and works closely with the product team to inform strategy for the Docs Editors. Prior to Google, she worked in Marketing at an environmental startup, Recyclebank, and was a strategic planner at advertising agency Ogilvy. As a result, she has a range of experience in various types of community management. She will be covering how a company like Google, that supports billions of users, looks at community.

  • Lisa Nielsen

    Lisa specializes in designing organizations that cultivate employee engagement and passion. She holds a Master’s in Psychology, with an emphasis on learning styles and human development and a second Master’s in Organization Development focusing on the people challenges associated with organization change. Having spent several years as a management consultant working with the Fortune 500 in these areas, she is currently the VP of People for Keen IO, a fast growing cloud analytics company, known for its innovative humanistic culture. She has lived as a yoga instructor in Costa Rica, backpacked throughout India, and owned a pie company in Vermont.

  • Lindsey Bonner

    Session: Engagement Lightning Talks
    Lindsey manages the instructor community at Udemy, one of the world’s largest online course marketplaces. Lindsey got her start building user relationships at Yelp, where she helped lead communications with business owners as a member of the User Ops team. In her two years at Udemy, membership in the online instructor community has tripled and the number of monthly active members has doubled. Lindsey has also led numerous initiatives to strengthen the partnership between Udemy and its supply side community, including the company’s first-ever, wildly successful global instructor summit.

    Lindsey is excited to share some of her top strategies for increasing community engagement at CMX Summit.

  • Claire Arthurs

    Session: Acquisition and Retention Communities
    Claire is a Director of Community and Member Success at SoFi, a modern finance company taking an unprecedented approach to lending and wealth management. In her role, she’s helping to create and engage SoFi’s 200,000 member community through unique activations, product offerings, and networking events across the country—like private dinners at sought-after restaurants, skydiving singles events, white water rafting excursions, and panels on salary negotiation. She holds an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, where she served in several leadership positions in her class, and graduated Cum Laude from Dartmouth College, where she studied Art History. Prior to business school, Claire was the Executive Director of a non-profit organization focused on community-based education initiatives for women in rural India. Fun fact: Claire lived in India for 2 years where she commuted to work via rickshaw every day. Needless to say, she’s always planning for her next adventure.

  • Brian Oblinger

    Session: Support Communities
    Brian Oblinger is Vice President of Community and Support at Alteryx, where he is responsible for overseeing strategy, execution, and measurement of community and customer support to drive engagement, satisfaction, and retention.

    Prior to joining Alteryx, Brian spent 10 years at Lithium Technologies helping top companies like Acer, Autodesk, Comcast, eBay, Hewlett-Packard, and Sony PlayStation create unique and engaging social community experiences for their brand advocates, partners, and employees.

    Brian lives in Orange County, CA where he enjoys volunteering at animal rescues, hiking, and long walks on the beach at sunset.

  • Suzi Nelson

    Session: Engagement Lightning Talks
    Born and raised in west Texas, Suzi Nelson is the Community Manager for DigitalMarketer, where she oversees a closed and growing Facebook group of over 10,000 members. Prior to joining DigitalMarketer, Suzi worked as a marketing coordinator, communications specialist, and a volunteer coordinator. Her interest in community management began when she worked for AmeriCorps as a Multimedia Volunteer Coordinator.

    As Community Manager, she provides assistance, support, encouragement, and advocacy for DigitalMarketer’s private customer group by bridging the gap between company, content, and customer. In her time at DigitalMarketer, the community activity has increased 92.81% through Suzi’s strategic approach to relationship building and reinforcing positive customer experiences.

    When not fostering DigitalMarketer’s community, Suzi is adamantly defending the Oxford comma, hanging with her two rescue dogs, and trying to convince her friends and family that her Netflix addiction really isn’t that bad.

    Suzi will be sharing the unique program she used to activate a huge number of lurkers in her community.

  • Michelle Leblanc

    Session: Employee Engagement
    Michelle LeBlanc is a social media and content marketing strategist with ten years of experience in the field. Her love of community building began at the Institute for International Research, a professional conference production company, where she ran online communities to correspond to events in the marketing and innovation portfolio. Since then, she has had the pleasure to lead projects for both local businesses and fortune 500 brands like Con-way Inc., Procter & Gamble’s SK-II and American Express Global Business Travel. She currently creates content and community strategies for Industrium, an integrated agency in Portland, Maine. In her free time, she also serves as the president of the Ad Club of Maine.

  • Laura Gluhanich

    MC, Theater
    Laura is the Head of Community at Everwise, focused on building a vibrant network of professional learners. Prior to that, along with Fiona Tang, she built the community consultancy, Signal Camp. Laura started her community career at Ning and about.me. She’s passionate about mentorship, music and wine.

  • Ashley Hayes

    MC, Pavilion
    Ashley Hayes is a visionary community leader and builder in the tech and startup space, with extensive experience in crafting global community, social media, marketing, branding and public relations strategy and content for countless brands. Her resume includes companies like Google, Yelp, Zagat, Tasteful, Zipongo, and LivingSocial, as well as the creation of her company, Tech & Vine Events and Marketing, in 2013.

    Seasoned leader in local philanthropic organizations, Ashley has serves as President of the Spinsters of San Francisco and is an active participant with the Junior League of San Francisco, California Alumni Association, UCSF Partners in Care, and the Tara L. Reidley Foundation, amongst others. Additionally, Ashley’s lifelong journey of wellness and spiritual alignment has manifested with daily yoga practice for the last 15 years, teaching Bay Area residents meditation, vinyasa and restorative yoga in several local studios, as well as hosting global retreats, workshops, group energy and sound healings, and sacred Native American medicine rituals and ceremonies.

  • David Spinks

    David Spinks is the CEO of CMX. His mission in life is to help good people change the world through community development. David has been obsessed with online communities since building his first at the age of 13. He’s spent the last decade working in the community industry, helping companies like Google, Le Web, Zaarly, Udemy and many more build thriving communities.

    Today, with CMX, he spends every day studying communities and community theory in order to advance the community industry and help community professionals thrive. He’s also a 3x startup founder, a 500 Startups mentor, a keynote speaker, and he’s remarkably good at growing hair.

  • Evan Hamilton

    Evan is a community professional with almost a decade of experience building communities that strengthen retention and create win-wins for company and customer. Evan has worked at Flock, UserVoice, ZOZI, and Coursera. Evan is now Director of Community at CMX, which is focused on furthering the community industry and helping community professionals thrive via events, content, and training.
