Boston While Black (BWB) is a membership network for Black professionals, entrepreneurs, and students who are seeking connection and community. Through our digital platform and in-person and virtual programming, we serve members who are seeking access to culturally-relevant experiences, information and resources to navigate the city, and an authentic personal and professional network. We are shaping a city where Black people want to live and work because they have the spaces, tools, and relationships to find their tribe, grow their network, navigate the city, and have fun. 

ABOUT THE ROLE 

BWB is seeking an experienced, creative, and strategic connector to join our team in Boston as the Head of Community. We are at a pivotal growth stage and need a strong leader that will manage and grow our rapidly expanding digital and in-person membership community and remote and in-person member experience team. In this role, you will have the opportunity to shape how we connect with and support our members and partners at scale. You will work closely with our business development, marketing, events, and operations leads to build a unique, sticky, and impactful member experience - online and offline.

Working closely with the Founder and CEO, the Head of Community will design, own, and execute BWB’s membership growth and engagement strategy. In addition, you will drive partnerships, campaigns, and signature public events that further establish BWB as a regional and national leader in belonging and community.

The Head of Community will report directly to the CEO. This strong people manager will lead a small but growing team of direct reports. You must be in the Greater Boston area and attend weekly in-person and virtual meetings and events. The ideal candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, constantly evolving environment. At your core, you must be unapologetically committed to access, joy, belonging, and community for Black people.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Member Acquisition, Retention, and Growth

  • Lead strategy, execution, and the team to drive membership acquisition, retention, and an exceptional member experience
  • Develop a membership growth roadmap, which includes expanding to new customers, markets, and pricing models 
  • Set and track KPIs, metrics, and stories to inform business decisions and measure community health
  • Work with customer success manager to manage corporate and university partnerships, ensuring engagement and retention of their employees
  • Secure and manage strategic partnerships that enhance the member experience and serve as a pipeline for growth

Leadership and Management

  • Serve as a key leader in the company, working with the CEO to execute the long-term vision
  • Manage direct reports and lead hiring processes for new roles
  • Review current processes and develop a plan of action to improve workflows with operations, marketing, and community leads
  • Ensure internal and external events profitability & efficiency, as well as event-specific ROI
  • Manage departmental financial reporting, budget, and expenses 
  • Hire and manage contractors focused on signature public events and internal projects

Public Events and Engagement

  • Help shape the strategy and direction for our signature programs (Summit, Reunion) 
  • Secure and manage strategic partnerships that enhance the member experience and serve as a pipeline for growth
  • Serve as a liaison/representative of BWB at community and industry events and with external stakeholders
  • Engage in the local social, professional, and political scenes

 

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS 

  • 10+ years of experience building and leading digital or in-person communities of 500+ people
  • Passionate about relationship-building and proven ability to make strategic connections
  • Excel as a people manager with a proven track record of leading a professional, efficient, service-oriented team
  • Expertise in, metrics/KPIs, reporting, workflow design, procedural optimization
  • Analytical mindset to understand and clearly convey operational and financial metrics, insights and impact
  • Outstanding executive-level verbal and written skills
  • An entrepreneurial attitude, natural curiosity, eagerness to learn, and the right expectations for working at an early-stage startup
  • Culturally aware, with a finger on the pulse on issues, trends, and research that impact Black people and culture
  • Experience in managing concurrent projects and timelines/deliverables in a fast-paced & high-energy environment 
  • A deep commitment to and passion for the mission of Boston While Black 
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to a changing work environment and schedule, including weekly evening and weekend meetings and events 

 

JOB STATUS and COMPENSATION 

This is a permanent, full-time position. The salary for this role is between $100,000 - $125,000, dependent on experience. Interviews will begin in mid-April and aim for an early June start date.  Benefits include:
