Introduction to Web 3.0 for Community Builders

These days, conversations around cryptocurrency are impossible to ignore. Whether you’re already investing in crypto, or you’re just crypto-curious, you can’t help but be intrigued by how the space is evolving.If you’re someone keeping your eye on the Ethereum space, you’ve probably been hearing the term “Web3.” According to Ethereum.org, Web3 directly refers to apps on the blockchain that are decentralized. Anyone using these apps can participate in trades and investing–without monetizing their own personal data.What does this mean for the future of crypto and, for those in our industry, community?Distributed users and machines can use Web 3.0 to interact with data and value through peer-to-peer networks instead of relying on third-party entities. In other words, crypto users relying on apps can connect with each other directly without third-party interference.Let’s take a step back and look at some basic terminology:Blockchain (via Oxford Languages): A system in which a record of transactions made in bitcoin or another cryptocurrency are maintained across several computers that are linked in a peer-to-peer networkCryptocurrency (via Oxford Languages): a digital currency in which transactions are verified and records maintained by a decentralized system using cryptography, rather than by a centralized authority.DAO (via Forbes): DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) is an organization represented by rules encoded as a transparent computer program, controlled by the organization members, and not influenced by a central government. As the rules are embedded into the code, no managers are needed, thus removing any bureaucracy or hierarchy hurdles.NFT (via Merriam-Webster): An NFT (Non-Fungible Token) is a unique digital identifier that cannot be copied, substituted, or subdivided, that is recorded in a blockchain, and that is used to certify authenticity and ownership (as of a specific digital asset and specific rights relating to it).Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s get to the good part. On Tuesday, November 16, we’ll be hosting a community event for beginners looking to get their start with Web3 and crypto.
